Foods to Try in Vellore

When one thinks of Vellore, what comes to mind is delicious idlis and rich filter coffee. But there is more than meets the eye with this cuisine. Known for its variety of spices and rich flavours, Vellore offers the best mix of South Indian and Mughal palates. Many of these dishes are unknown delicacies but will titillate your taste buds nevertheless. If you are planning to visit this Tamilian City, here is a list of foods you must definitely give a try.

Chicken Varuval

This spicy deep-fried chicken dish is known to make noses run. Despite the high spice content, it will be difficult to stop eating. Known for its rich South Indian flavour, it is a favourite among locals and tourists alike. Anyone looking to try the Tamilian palate should not miss the chicken varuval. Seasoned with the signature cardamom and lovely curry coating the dish, it is often thick and creamy and a delight to consume.

Pazham Dosai

A vegetarian breakfast delicacy, this is essentially a banana pancake sprinkled with sesame seeds. Its greatness lies in its simplicity - the batter requires no fermenting or grinding and yet smells heavenly. With aromatic cardamom, sweet juicy consistency of bananas and powdered jaggery, this is also a healthy snack to munch on.

Meen Kuzhambu

A famous Tamilian and Sri Lankan dish, Kuzhambu originally means curry in Tamil while Meen stands for fish. The fish curry is rich in flavour and spice. Traditionally cooked in earthen or clay pot, the fish is prepared in a spicy broth of onions, tamarind, spices, and tomatoes, all of which is sautéed in sesame oil. It often resembles rasam and is a burst of intense flavours.

Biryani

Biryani is a dish no one can keep their hands off. This historical city is popular for its biryani with mutton biryani being a popular dish. Traditionally served on a coconut tree leaf, there is no denying that this is a universal favourite.

Barotta

This is a layered flat bread made of maida and is a street delicacy in many places across Vellore. Also served at auspicious occasions such as religious festivals, feasts, and weddings, it is prepped by kneading maida with egg and ghee along with water. The dough is kneaded and beaten into multiple thin paper like layers to form a spiralled round ball using thin layers. The ball is then made flat by rolling and pan fried. This is usually consumed with vegetable kurma or chicken and features across South Indian cuisine.
