Five Things You Can do Only in the Pink City

Built in the 18th century, the exquisite city of Jaipur is famous for its royal charm. Jaipur is replete with pink stone buildings at every turn in the old town. This regal city is a great place to start when venturing into your great Indian royal adventure around Rajasthan. Check into a hotel in Jaipur and start with the top five things you can only experience here –

Experience ‘Tirtha’ in Chand Baori

Located in Abhaneri, a short drive from Jaipur, this is one of the largest and most spectacular looking stepwells in the region. With 3,500 terraced steps and a glorious temple, this well goes 13 stories deep and has a depth of 100 feet. Constructed back in the 10th century, it is believed that one can experience “Tirtha”, a space between heaven and hell, when you visit this spot. The temple is dedicated to Harsha Mata, the goddess of joy and happiness.

Watch the Hustle and Bustle of the Old City from Hawa Mahal

At a driveable distance from most hotels in Jaipur, the intricately carved façade of the Hawa Mahal consists of 953 windows. The palace was designed to enable the queens and ladies of the royal court to view the hustle and bustle of the streets down below, without being observed themselves. The Palace of the Winds was constructed towards the end of the 18th century, by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, to be a part of the City Palace.

Witness the World’s Largest Stone Sundial

A collection of nineteen architectural astronomical instruments, the Jantar Mantar monument was designed using the principals of astronomy as mentioned in the ancient Hindu Sanskrit texts. Made of masonry, stone and brass, this complex is home to the world’s largest stone sundial, along with instruments that enable observations of astronomical positions with the naked eye.

Galtaji

A sanctuary in the heart of Jaipur, Galtaji is a popular pilgrimage spot for Hindus. Many arrive here to bathe in the sacred springs and reservoirs located in the enormous complex. The most sacred of the seven spots, Galta Kund, is known to have never gone dry. Dedicated to the Hindu monkey god, Hanuman, the temple is most known for its tribe of monkeys that reside here, believed to be his present-day descendants.

Jal Mahal

Head out from your hotel in Jaipur and visit the Jal Mahal that sits right in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake. The palace currently appears to be only one story high, when in fact there are four more levels of the building which are submerged underwater of this manmade reservoir. This building was never intended to be a ‘Water Palace’, as it is now called, but was originally a hunting lodge for the local king.

As a famous destination for tourists from around the world, the city of Jaipur has a lot of unique experiences that you will find only here.
