A Day Out in the City of Joy - Kolkata

“Amar sonar Bangla,” a phrase written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1905 holds true even a century later- Bengal (now known West Bengal) is indeed gorgeous, with Kolkata as its most beautiful city. It was the capital of British India till 1911, and you can still notice an extensive influence of the British architecture all over the city. As soon as you arrive at the enormous Howrah Railway Station, you would notice such architectural marvels- the railway station being one among them.

Crossing the Howrah Bridge to reach Kolkata is an obligation, and a customary act of sorts. The 705-meter long cantilever suspended bridge doesn’t have a single pillar and is supported by a well-structured iron frame. There’s an amazing view of the iron mesh on top, and the vehicles passing by make a beautiful ruckus. You could still notice trams, rickshaw pullers, cyclists, and motorists; all riding on the same street.

Streets to Walk On

Whenever you are in Kolkata, keep your eyes fixated on the buildings that pass by. These buildings could be centuries old and you would be amazed by their sheer architectural beauty. There are several streets in Kolkata that are known as the leisure hub since the colonial times. These include Park Street, Park Circus, and Esplanade.

Places That are a Must-Visit in Kolkata

Victoria Memorial

Victoria Memorial was built between 1906 and 1921 in the memory of Queen Victoria to showcase the success of the British regime in India. Visit Victoria Memorial for the huge gardens sprawled all around the main building, which also consists of books, paintings, and sketches depicting insights of the British rule.

Princep Ghat

Princep Ghat is located on the banks of the Hooghly River, and is known as one of the best recreational sites in the city. You can sit on the banks of this beautiful river, while gazing at the mesmerizing view of the city.

Too Sweet to Miss

The term roshogulla and Kolkata have become almost synonymous to each other. But it’s not just the roshogulla that depicts the sweetness of this spectacular city. The city enjoys a huge array of delectable sweets that build up Kolkata’s supremacy as the land of sweets. Sondesh, Mishti Dohi, and Kesar Kulfi are a few names you should familiarize yourself with. KC Das, Girish Chandra Day & Nakur Nanda Nandy, and Balaram Mullick & Radharam Mullick are a few among the most famous sweet shops in Kolkata.

What’s New?

Kolkata has always been associated with culture, heritage, and old buildings but the city has come a long way in terms of a modern makeover. Localities like Salt Lake and New Town have embarked the beginning of the IT era in Kolkata.

Kolkata is indeed a city of joy, and a large part of it stays in the hangover of the British Era. You get to experience the Bengali culture, where people are inclined towards intellectual discussions, and where food is not only about its nutritional value, but contains emotional value just as well!

There are several hotels in Kolkata where you can experience a comfortable stay. Fortune Park Panchwati in Kolkata combines each attribute of the city into one, so that you can enjoy this pretty city in its entirety.
