Bangalore, apart from being India’s own Silicon Valley, is also home to some of the most famous temples. With over 1,000 temples scattered all over the city, there are some that even date all the way back to the 10th century. Step out of your hotel in Bangalore and head over to these must-visit temples:
Chokkanathaswamy Temple
Situated near the airport is Bangalore’s oldest temple – the Chokkanathaswamy Temple. Built in the 10th century, the temple was later renovated to its former glory. The most prominent feature of this temple is its pillars, on which visitors can see the carvings of ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. If you are visiting the city, then you can book a hotel in Bangalore near the airport, and make a short vacation of it!
Bull Temple at Basavanagudi (Dodda Basavana Gudi)
The Bull Temple in South Bangalore is unique in one aspect. It is believed that the statue of Nandi, the Hindu demi-god, is carved out of a single piece of granite. Considered to be the largest temple of Nandi, with the statue measuring 15 feet in height and 20 feet in length, the actual shrine that houses the idol is quite small.
Dodda Ganesha Temple
This Ganesha temple is situated in the same complex as the Nandi temple, and stands tall at 18 feet in height and 16 feet in width. Locals refer to the idol as Shakthi Ganapathi. A regular feature of this temple is that the idol is decorated with different decorations each day of the week.
Gavi Gangadareshwara Temple
The Gavi Gangadareshwara Temple is a cave temple, one of the few in the world. Built in the 9th century, the temple is believed to be carved out of a single rock. It is also one of Bangalore’s few temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple also has other idols, including one of Nandi and Agni.
The ISKCON Temple
This temple was built in honour of the birth centennial of Sri Prabhupada, the founder of ISKON. An architectural marvel, the temple is famed for its arches, fountains and an attached cultural complex, where regular activities are held for devotees. There are also residential areas for devotees who do not wish to stay at a hotel in Bangalore.
